It's been just under a week since I've gotten here and I've already learned so much. For example, thunderstorms and 100 degree weather can coexist (what the actual eff?), not all residential streets have sidewalks, and a single traffic circle can connect nine different streets. Michael joined me for these first few days in Maryland to help me move in and get settled. Here's a look at the new room.
No move-in would be complete without IKEA. Luckily, my room was already furnished with the big stuff, including a queen sized bed. Waugh. I've never owned a bed this big before. Yes, that is a Berkeley physics poster on the wall.
The room comes with a decent sized closet that can be walk-in if you're short like me.
My fancy desk and workspace. The walls are a little bare, but full of picture mounts. I guess the girl that lived here last year was not too fond of the landlord's art. There's a huge pile of art in the attic though, so maybe I'll go hunt something down.
The room is great and way bigger than any room I'm used to (in two dimensions).
While I don't have time to go into detail about everything that's been happening here, some highlights:
- We went to the National Building Museum to check out some buildings and stuff. We walked into one exhibit and the woman asks us, "Do ya'll speak English?"
- Michael sort of accidentally broke my ceiling fan (that is, made it wobble uncontrollably). Rather than risk ceiling fan explosion, we took it apart for almost an hour and reattached it to the wall. Then he ended up solving the problem by taping pennies to one of the blades.
- Chinatown is... strange. Mostly US stores with Chinese writing underneath it. So it actually looks a lot like parts of real China. I have yet to try any Chinese food here.
- On the east coast, they have a strange soda called Birch Beer. Tastes like root beer, but red.
